Purpose of Qualification
The Certificate IV in TESOL is specifically designed to give you the practical skills to teach English in Australia or internationally. You will learn the latest teaching strategies and methodology in practical classes for developing the English language proficiency of a wide range of second language learners. The Certificate IV in TESOL follows a competency-based approach; therefore, training and assessments will focus on demonstrating underpinning knowledge and practical skills.
The TESOL course involves both theoretical and practical components. Participants must fulfill the minimum requirement of six hours of supervised and assessed teaching practice to conform with the requirements of the National English (Language Teaching) Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) for a TESOL qualification. The six hours of the teaching practicum details will be discussed in the orientation session.
Pathways
A TESOL certificate is a good way to enter the field of English language education. Many students use this as the first stepping stone in a path that will include a diploma or degree. For existing degree holders it is an excellent complement and enhances your career opportunities in education. After achieving this qualification candidates may teach small groups of migrants in a supervised and limited capacity for the development of general English skills , or in Australian ELICOS schools if you have additional qualifications (Refer to the NEAS’ website: http://www.neas.org.au/teachers/elt.php) , to overseas students on an individual tuition or small group tutorial basis or to overseas institutions not governed by Australian standards where predominantly conversation English teaching is required.
