What is English for Academic Purposes (EAP)?

  • English for Academic Purposes is aimed at students who need English for use in higher education or university courses.
  • Concentrates on academic skills needed for listening, speaking, reading and writing in Australian tertiary institutes.
  • 2 level programme - EAP 1 and EAP 2
  • Graduating students may continue to study Certificate IV of Business or Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Business Management or the Diploma of Accounting at Australian Nationwide College. Other courses are available at other tertiary institutions for students to continue their studies.
  • (NB *Admission requirements must be met.)

What are the features of the EAP course?

  • 2 levels - 10 weeks of study for each level
  • 20 weeks full programme
  • New student entry starting every week
  • 20 hours of class time and 1 hour independent research per week.
  • All classes have access to computers and aids to language learning
  • Progress reports every month
  • Certificates upon completion

Automatic acceptance to Central Queensland University after being assessed at having an EAP 2 pass grade.

  • University qualified teachers with specialist language teaching qualifications
  • Up-to-date teaching methodology

Outcomes

By the end of their course students will:

  • Be familiar with the cultural norms/values of tertiary institutions in Australia.
  • Have started to attain the necessary linguistic skills/ competencies needed for tertiary study, e.g. to better master the written system of English in relevant academic genres and to develop some research skills and to extend their speaking skills in both an informal atmosphere and in academic discussions.
  • Have developed the necessary learning strategies and study skills appropriate for Australian tertiary education.
  • Have become better equipped at handling external English exams like the IELTS.
